Celebrating National Insurance Careers Month in February

You provide a quality product. You have significant earnings potential. You have the flexibility to prioritize your time and tasks by taking ownership of your schedule. You’re an insurance agent — and February is National Insurance Careers Month, so we’re celebrating careers within the insurance industry by reflecting on some of the key benefits that come with being a part of a thriving industry.

Here are 5 of the most rewarding aspects of having a career in insurance:

1) You’re helping people. The products that you provide and the guidance and expertise that you offer to your clients make a difference in their lives. Because insurance offers peace of mind today and protection for tomorrow, the work that you do matters for the clients whom you represent. Insurance isn’t an everyday commodity. It’s a valuable product that truly serves your clients when they are most vulnerable, while offering a sense of security each and every day. Knowing that you’re helping your clients in meaningful ways is not only rewarding. It’s also motivating. Not all sales positions offer this kind of inspiration to take on the next task in your list of to-dos.

2) You’ve got opportunities. With 4% of millennials expressing an interest in insurance and 50% of the current insurance workforce expected to retire by 2028, the field is brimming with open opportunities for the future. Additionally, insurance is one of the few products that serve all types of individuals and businesses throughout all types of specific situations. As an insurance agent, you’re not limited to a seasonal or niche product. That said, you also have the ability to offer highly customized options so that you’re not providing a “one size fits all” product that may have less value to your clients over time. Instead, you’re offering specific products that are designed to serve specific purposes, allowing you to present the exact insurance products for the situation at hand. This is high-level service with a customized product which results in repeat business. As life changes for your clients, the products that you provide can be adapted in ways to ensure that they continue to meet the needs of your clients.

3) You’re learning a variety of skills. While many people may assume that insurance is all about sales and customer service, the reality is that being an insurance agent means that you’re developing a number of important skillsets. From communication to technology, to research and analytics, your job is one that requires diverse skills that can serve you well. Insurance agents are knowledgeable within the realms of digital marketing, social media, organization, problem-solving, and cyber communication. These are all exciting skills that make you a well-rounded professional.

4) You’ve got job security. Insurance has been a part of our society for centuries. Research has shown that even during times of economic recessions, insurance remains stable. No matter the economy, individuals and businesses need protection. The products that you provide serve those who own homes, drive cars, rent property, run businesses, have medical needs, or who have new or aging family members. So, in short: everyone!

5) You’ve got a way in. Getting started in the insurance industry isn’t overly complicated. Many times, previous work experience isn’t necessary. If you’re willing to choose your specialty, get licensed, commit to continuing your on-the-job education — and of course, be willing to work hard and adapt to the needs of your clients, you can quickly begin to gain footing within the industry of insurance.
